The plant would help Apple achieve its goal of localizing the supply chain and strengthening its ties with Tata, which it presently owns an iPhone manufacturing facility in Karnataka that it acquired from Wistron. When the new Tamil Nadu facility starts producing iPhones, it might surpass the Karnataka facility’s output by a wide margin.
With the iPhone assembly plant in Tamil Nadu expected to start operations by the end of 2024, more phones being made locally could lead to reduced prices for Apple devices, escalating the rivalry between Samsung and Apple.
Tata Electronics already has a large manufacturing operation in Hosur, employing over 5,000 people. The facility is in charge of making the exterior cases for the iPhones.
